Tough cookie: Cheryl Cole returns to the Sunset Marquis hotel in Los Angeles after her day in the recording studio

Cheryl Cole is back at work and recording new material - despite warnings from her X Factor boss Simon Cowell that she should still be taking it easy after her life-threatening bout of malaria.

She was seen leaving the studio, dressed in tracksuit bottoms and a hooded top, before returning to her nearby hotel, shortly followed by Hough.

The 27-year-old star flew out to Los Angeles to recuperate from the illness at the end of July with her close friend, dancer Derek Hough.

She's been staying at the Sunset Marquis hotel there but she's been regular touch with Cowell as she gets her strength back in time to return to the X Factor.

However, she's not due back on the show until October - and it seems the Girls Aloud star can't wait until then to get back to work.

Despite doctors also ordering the Fight For This Love singer to reduce her hectic schedule - they believe she found it harder to get better from the infection as her immune system was so weak with overwork - she's busy recording the follow-up to her debut album 3 Words.

Music mogul Cowell is said to be 'disappointed' to hear that she's not only been singing again, but has also been meeting TV executives.

A source told this week's Closer magazine: 'Simon spoke to Cheryl before she went out to LA and she specifically told him she was going out to rest, recuperate, gain some weight and hang out in the sun away from the glare of photographers.'

'The last thing he expected was for her to go over to America and start working.

Simon hasn’t berated her down the phone or anything, but he’s let it be known he’s not very happy. He just wants her to concentrate on getting 100 per cent better.'

Cheryl spent two weeks in hospital after collapsing with the illness, which she caught while on holiday with Hough in Tanzania.

Close friend: Dancer Derek Hough follows Cheryl into the hotel shortly afterwards

But the Geordie lass is defying the advice to keep taking things steadily and is said to be laying down at least two tracks before she returns home.

It's also been reported today that Cheryl is secretly dating dancer Hough rather than going public with the relationship because technically, she's still married to loverat footballer Ashley Cole, 29.

They separated in February after a series of lurid revelations about the Chelsea and England footballer's infidelity.

An insider told this week's Now magazine: 'Cheryl's decided to keep the details of her and Derek's relationship under wraps until her divorce is finalised in the next few weeks.

'She doesn't think it's appropriate or looks good for her to flaunt her relationship with Derek with any public declarations of affection when she's still a married woman.'

Cheryl's X Factor colleague Brian Friedman however spilled the beans on the Cheryl's romance earlier this month.

Choreographer Brian, 33, boasted that he spent time with them in LA at the beginning of August and that they make a 'great couple'.

However, Cheryl will be officially divorced by the time she returns to work on the X Factor as revealed earlier by the Daily Mail - so perhaps she'll go public with her relationship then.

Cheryl is due to rejoin Cowell, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh live on air in October. Cheryl and her then pregnant cohort Dannii Minogue were replaced by a a host of stars during their time off the show, including Geri Halliwell, Nicole Scherzinger and Katy Perry.

Cheryl said at the weekend that she felt fit enough to return to her job as an X Factor judge, saying 'I'm absolutely gutted I missed the last audition and the boot camp stage, but I am really excited and really looking forward to seeing what the other judges have chosen.'

She added: 'I can't wait to get my category so I can get my teeth into it. I will be raring to go.'

The second show in this year's series of the X Factor is on ITV1 this Saturday at 7.30pm.
