Why She's No.92, Carey Mulligan
The Oscar buzz for 24-year-old British actress Carey Mulligan started back at Sundance (2009) for her role in the Nick Hornby-written An Education (opposite Peter Sarsgaard). By the time the spring of ’09 rolled around, Mulligan was starring in The Greatest opposite Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon, and by summer she was on screens worldwide along with Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard in Public Enemies. Then, in time for fall, Mulligan appeared in the drama Brothers with Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman.
It’s hard to believe that this young actress -- whose parents discouraged her from acting -- got her start in a rather unbelievably charming way: While preparing to attend Reading University -- because according to her parents it was the necessary next step in life -- the aspiring actress wrote to English actor and novelist Julian Fellowes on a whim about her desire to act. Fellowes' wife invited her for dinner, and soon after she was auditioning for her first film role as Kitty Bennet in Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice (2005) opposite Keira Knightley. She won the part and, poetically enough considering the Oscar buzz surrounding Mulligan this time around, will work with Knightley again this spring in Never Let Me Go. She’s currently filming the much-anticipated sequel to Oliver Stone’s Wall Street, entitled Money Never Sleeps.
